| Painted in the spring of 1889 while residing at the mental asylum in Saint-Remy-de-Provence, The Iris clearly shows the effect that the Impressionists, particularly Paul Gauguin, had on Van Gogh after his arrival from Holland. Looser brushstrokes and brighter colors show the joy and torment of his life. |
