First exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1853, Rosa Bonheur is noted for her detailed accuracy and became one of the most successful women artists of the nineteenth century. Later acquired by Cornelius Vanderbilt for a record sum, this image fairly shouts with action. Unconventional in lifestyle and associated with liberal socialists who demanded equality for women, Bonheur later refused to paint anything other than wild animals. |
