A painter in the academic tradition, Bouguereau's work was carefully composed and painstakingly finished. He was opposed to the work of the Impressionists on the grounds that their work was merely unfinished sketches. The tender scenes of children struck a sentimental chord with viewers of the nineteenth century and are now increasingly popular.
