Montague grew up on Southampton Water admiring boats and ships. During World War I he joined the Royal Navy. His experience out on the sea fueled his passion for painting the sea and ships. He has the ability to make his viewers feel as if they are right there on the water. The Homecoming encapsulates the joy of entering home waters by showing all of the other boats and ships in the harbor.
